The MOMentum Blog
Where athlete stories meet expert insights
Welcome to our Blog!
So much of what athletes know about pregnancy, parenthood, and sport comes from other athletes. A conversation with a teammate. A text to someone who has been through it. A story you remember from an interview. And, increasingly, a news story that gives you a glimpse into someone else’s experience, but there is usually a lot more to the story.
We wanted to create a space where athletes can share those experiences in their own words, beyond the headlines and the soundbites. A place to talk about the decisions, challenges, workarounds, wins, setbacks and things that may not make the news.
We also wanted to make space for the people doing the research and the work alongside athletes. Researchers, clinicians, lawyers and experts who can share what they are learning, what the evidence actually says, and where there are still gaps.
And, importantly, there's no paywall here. We want this information to be accessible to the athletes who need it, whether you're on a national team, just getting started in your sport, thinking about having kids someday, or figuring out what comes next. We'll link to the original research and sources wherever we can, so you can dig deeper yourself.
This blog will bring those two things together:
Athlete Stories: Real Experiences from elite athletes, in their own words
Research & Insights From Experts: Research, expertise and perspectives that can help us better understand pregnancy, parenthood, reproduction and sport.

Our first academic partnership to share stories that don’t often make the headlines.
MOMentum is proud to be a community partner with Dr. Kerry McGannon at Laurentian University, working together to co-create and bring forward the stories of athlete mothers.
Dr. McGannon’s research focuses on media and athlete motherhood, revealing the need for more nuanced, authentic, and diverse representations of what it means to be an athlete and a mother, including the moments and experiences that don’t always make the news.
To help bring these stories forward, Dr. McGannon applied for ( and won!) an internal SSHRC Exchange Grant, supporting a project that brings together Laurentian PhD student and MOMentum co-founder @jillmoffatt with athlete mothers to co-create stories about their experiences.
